1962 Ferrari 250 GTO By Scaglietti Sets Global Auction Record

This 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO by Scaglietti set a record Saturday at RM Sotheby’s Monterey event for most expensive car sold at auction to the tune of a whopping $48,405,000.

Dubbed by the auction house as, “the world’s most important, desirable, and legendary motor car” it isn’t particularly shocking the car hammered at such a high-price, but nonetheless record sales are always amazing to see. The car itself is the third of only 36 ever produced and one of just four to receive an upgrade by Scaglietti.

In addition to being one of the best maintained examples of such a rare car, this Ferrari also had a storied racing career. Taking home 15 class and overall wins for the Italian manufacturer between 1962 and 1965 the car was instrumental in helping them claim their 1964 GT manufacturers championship.

With so much now invested in the car it will be interesting to keep an eye out for it in the future to see how the investment paid off, but something tells us if you’ve got that much to throw at a car, you’re not that worried.
