All Hail ‘The Emperor’ By George Barris

If you’re trying to place the name George Barris in automtotive history be sure that you’re not alone. For some he’s a famed customizer, but for others more engrained in popular culture, he’s the creator of the Batmobile from the 1960’s TV series. No matter how you know the name, his imprint on the automotive landscape is vast and ever-lasting.

A 1929 Ford Model A Roadster, or Emperor as its become known, was built by Barris at the request of a young Chuck Krikorian who was looking for a show car build. And a show car he got. Since its completion the car has gone onto win the 1960 America’s Most Beautiful Roadster award and go on to grace the cover of Hot Rod magazine that same year. In true hot rod tradition what you see here is a bit of a Frankenstein’s monster featuring a ’29 Ford Model A Roadster body with a Cadillac 365cu.-in. V8 turned 406 cu.-in. engine.

On the cosmetic side there is no doubt that you’re looking at a hot rod with the plethora of chrome, vibrant red and pearl upholstery. Destined to be the centerpiece of any collection this icon heads to Mecum’s Monterey auction as a part of the Blackie Gejeian Estate Collection where it is estimated to sell for between $300,000 – $400,000.
