This Is The Most Expensive Car Sold At Auction, It Could Be Yours In August

The 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO by Scaglietti carries with it many names, one of which is “most expensive car ever sold at auction” when it last sold for $38 million. The car has now earned a new title, “most expensive car to ever be offered at auction” as it stands to cross the block at RM Sotheby’s Monterey auction in late August.

Only 36 of these 250 GTOs exist today of the 36 produced [record scratch]. That’s right, every single one of the 250 GTOs has survived 50+ years. This particular 1962 is chassis no. 3413 GT which was the third one ever produced. It remained a factory car for Ferrari before being sold to Edoardo Lualdi-Gabardi who put it to use the way it was intended, as a race car, and won 9 of 10 races in the car and taking second in the outlier.

The car was sold, but continued to race for another few years in a total of 20 races not once failing to finish or getting into an accident. In fact, the car maintains its “original engine, gearbox, and rear axle, as well as its factory Series II body.” It has seen many owners since its race career ended and the next in that prestigious lineage could be you following its sale at RM Sotheby’s Monterey auction.
