Rare ’70 GTO Seeks New Home At Houston Auction

In 1970 Pontiac was struggling to right the good ship GTO and in an attempt to do so they gave the, now classic, muscle car a mid-generation facelift. Out were the hidden headlights and in were the significantly more pronounced ones as seen here on this second-generation 1970 Pontiac GTO Ram Air III convertible.

Given sluggish sales 1970 was not a banner year for production, but even less so for GTO Ram Air III convertibles of which only 114 were ever produced. This example is being offered in Houston with its PHS documents and a detailed accounting of the full restoration it underwent. Despite the frame up restoration it saw, this GTO still features its matching numbers 400 cu.-in. engine, transmission and Positraction rear end and factory rally gauges. The exterior has gotten a boost by way of a Code 75 Cardinal Red paint job making the black vinyl interior with rare stripe option really pop all riding on date coded Rally II wheels wrapped in Firestone tires.

This 366hp muscle car is a prime example of the style of yesteryear and suited for any collector. It crosses the block at Mecum Houston in just two weeks when the annual auction is held from April 4-6th.
