What Modern Car Should Replace The DeLorean In Film?

We currently live in an era where reimagining and remake seem to dominate our entertainment choices. Is it Hollywood deciding that’s what the people want or are the people driving Hollywood to resurrect some of their favorites? That’s a topic for another time, but I, for one, think it’s lazy.

Take the classic Back to the Future, which saw two sequels rounding out the now iconic trilogy over the course of five years, do you truly expect that not to be remade? A critically acclaimed box office hit that spawned two sequels will undoubtedly again see the silver screen with a new Marty, new Doc and new DeLorean. A casting process which will undoubtedly be hell for any casting director, as those are same rather large self-lacing shoes to fill. However, I can offer up some help when it comes to the DMC DeLorean.

It’s easy to toss out names like Tesla, Bugatti and Pagani as they’re as futuristic looking today as the DeLorean was back then, but let’s not forget just how terrible the DeLorean was. DeLorean Motor Company, the DMC of the name, made only one model in its short life, the DeLorean. So, in some odd Prince or Cher-esque way the car essentially has one name. Additionally, the company was Irish and while known for many things, car manufacturing is not one of them. Sure, at the time, there was no way the filmmakers could have predicted the comical demise of a brand getting a plug in one of the best films of all time, but nevertheless that’s where we find ourselves looking back.

Today only one car comes to mind to carry the torch and it’s not a car at all. It encompasses where we’re going in terms of tech and as consumers and it carries with it the important distinction of still possibly being a massive failure, the Rivian R1T all-electric truck. Futuristic looks, an embodiment of the times, potential to not succeed, the R1T truck is the next-generation of taking you places where you don’t need roads.

“A truck? That’s crazy!” I’m sure a handful maybe thinking, but it matches up with nicely with the thinking behind the DeLorean and let’s not forget that originally the time machine was to be a refrigerator and I think we can all agree that this beats your GE.
